MS46.02: William Blathwayt Papers
George Turfrey Letter to Blathwayt dated April 6, 1683

Bermuda 6 Aprill 1683
Mr Wm Blathwait

Sr I wrote you a few lines about 12 mo. past, since I
have not bin so happy as to receive any from you
but Mr Righton is arrived, and I find among his
papers, the plan of the Court of Kings Bench, against
our Governors the Bermuda Company's illegall practises,
and an order of his Majty & Councill, for a trial of
their Charter by a new Quo Warranto, so I conclude
the Government of those Islands will fall immediately into
his Majties hands, and indeed itt is high time, for itt is
a shame the Garrison, wch is of so much importance to all
the West Indies, should be so much neglected as itt is, being
now subject to a small force, wch well looked after is
almost invisible. My request is,
that it fall in yor way, as it may, to recommend
me to the Sheriff or secretary, and to speak to
the Govnr that is to come, to lett long leases of the
publick lands (to incorridge building on, and improvements)
paying a fine and yearly rent: for as it is now only
att will, by yearly rent, it goes to ruin, as do the
publick houses wch will be prevented by yor making the
Commissions to Govnr , Sheriff, Secretary and other officers
[illegible], the officers will then build and
repair their houses att their own charges, wch will not
be done if they are subject every yeare to be removed.
So with my service presented, I crave leave to remaine

Your Humbl Srvt

George Turfrey
